Dr. Marc Lamont Hill - Speaker at the Anti-Racism seminar…

Saturday. 8/1/20

Class enrollment moves to 16…

8:00-9:00 - The dog starts barking. I go downstairs and the dog pooped throughout the house, by the front door AND the back door. While L. and I were in Vegas, R. came over twice a day to take care of the dog and she had NO accidents - no vomiting, no pooping, no peeing in the house. Why is she pooping when I’m here? I take her outside then give her cheese. I grab my coffee and return to my bed. I read two Money Diaries.

9:00-11:00-Spa day and I scrub Vegas off of my entire body. I dress professionally and do a full face of make-up and go glam for my Zoom Anti-Racism seminar that I’m scheduled to attend at 11:00. The full title: Anti Racism - A cross racial national dialogue on the history of anti-black racism and it’s impact on U.S. Society. I’m not sure what to expect but am hoping that, somehow, I might be able to network with the attendees and create some excitement and interest in my class. Maybe my enrollment will increase?

11:00-12:30 - I’m running a bit late for the seminar. I check College No. 1 email for the Zoom link and see that I can also connect via phone, so I do that instead and put the seminar on speaker. I’m kind of upset that I spent so much time getting ready for nothing. Oh well - it appears that networking is not in the cards, although I hear Dr. Hill say at one point there are 1300 guests in attendance [by Zoom and phone]. Wow! It costs $75 to attend unless you’re a teacher. There are three presenters here so $75 multiplied by, lets say, 1200 people, estimating that 100 guests are instructors and came for free. That’s still $90,000 - is it split between the three presenters? Impressive.

I do like the seminar! One of the speakers is recovering from Covid-19, but I’m not sure which one. I make a strawberry, almond butter, and avocado smoothie for breakfast while the seminar runs. I’m muted so they can’t hear me.

12:30 - 1:30 - There is a lot to do with my class as J. and I continue to try and increase attendance. More recently, I’ve been trying to research how my students can waive the Class Gold Star prerequisite. I’ve received a few emails from various administrators and think I know how best to advise them. I email the three students in question and one of the students responds, wanting to know if my class will qualify as an elective for her business administration program. I review the Course Catalog and it appears that, unfortunately, it will NOT. I email her the links to the Course Catalog for her review. Right now, customer service is everything as I need four more students to enroll in order to hit the magic number of 20. If that doesn’t happen, the class is over before it begins.

12:30 - L. leaves to drop off the dog for her grooming appointment. She’s going to Trader Joes after so I ask her to pick up avocados, spinach, and strawberries.

1:30 - 2:30 - I transfer all income/expenditures from my June budget to my Excel spreadsheet.

2:30-4:00 - I have a running list of toiletries/supplies that I need and place the order. L. returns with the dog. She looks so cute! It won’t last.

4:00-7:00 - I catch up on my blog entries.

7:00-8:00 - I water my plants. They really needed it. R. comes over and he and L. watch movies downstairs - I open several windows. A few days ago, R. bought me a huge bottle of champagne as a retirement gift and placed it in the refrigerator with a card before L. and I returned from Vegas - it was one of the first things I saw when I opened the refrigerator! He’s very thoughtful.

8:00 - 10:00 - I go upstairs and read Sometimes I Lie. I have more of the chicken and carrots and some champagne. For some reason, I’m super exhausted and end up taking a nap.

11:00 - L. leaves to take R. home and I do my nighttime routine, then take the dog out, and go to bed.
