Day 15 since I was injected with the J&J vaccine
I finished this book today…
4/23/21. Friday.
10:00 – 10:30 - I’m awake and at 99.5 pounds today. I go downstairs to greet the dog and see that she pooped in front of the door again. She rolls over so I can rub her tummy three times and then we go outside, where she runs around the yard – I don’t know what she’s doing. The dog finally goes potty and we return inside; old pizza for her treat, coffee for me.
Kitchen duty. I put the dishes away and another load goes in the dishwasher. One never-ending load of dishes after another.
10:30-11:30 – Blog post
11:30-12:30 – I finish Small Animals. I said in an earlier post that this is a memoir detailing an incident that occurred with the author’s 5-year-old son. The author, who is visiting her parents in the town where she grew up (Virginia), has to catch a flight (to Chicago where she lives) and could not find her son’s headphones, which he absolutely needs in order to listen to his Ipad on the plane. With her son in tow, the author drives to Target to purchase the headphones. Alas, her son [5-years-old] refuses to get out of the car because he’s playing on his “screens” so, pressed for time, the author cracks a window, locks her kid in the van, and goes inside Target. It’s 60 degrees outside and the author is literally gone for about 7 minutes. While the author is inside Target, a “good Samaritan” aka “asshole” calls the cops and films her son, playing quietly on his Ipad inside the car. The author’s errand is so quick, she’s actually gone well before the police arrive.
She and her children make it to the airport on time and catch the flight without incident. However, while she’s in flight, the police show up at her parents’ house and start questioning her Mom about a heinous act involving her Mom’s car. The heinous act in question was the author leaving her son in the van for 7 minutes. The author, once she’s back in Chicago, has to retain counsel, who calls the Virginia police department and District Attorney to determine how they are going to proceed. The DA is undecided so the author’s attorney advises that they take a ‘wait-and-see’ approach.
Almost a year later, the author receives a phone call from the Virginia police dept. that there is a warrant out for her arrest. Until this phone call, the author was never notified, and she must now fly to Virginia and turn herself in, which she does, on charges of neglect. She later pleads to a misdemeanor of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, which is the same charge used when an adult furnishes beer to teenager.
The above is a complete nightmare and rolls along for two years. The incident, itself, could probably be summarized in around 5 pages but the author turns the book into a treatise on parental fear and overprotection of our children in American society, as she tries to find out how we got that way and where it all went so wrong. Highly recommend.
12:30-1:45 –I have a few apple slices with almond butter, then do an Insanity – Cardio and Resistance workout.
1:45-3:00 – Shower. Lotion. Covid-19 uniform. Light make-up.
3:00-5:00 – B. picks me up and we go to The Local for Happy Hour. I have two glasses of champagne and a Happy Hour appetizer called “Garlic and Parmesan spuds” which consists of tater tots, rolled and dipped in garlic and cheese. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a serving of carbs this large and I really indulge – the “spuds” taste amazing! There are a few people inside, but B. and I request outside – I’m not sure if I will ever be able to sit inside a restaurant again – and I feel safe, especially since the tables are so far apart.
5:00-11:00 – Return to my house and B. and I watch the first two episodes of Allan vs. Farrow. I’ve already seen it, but don’t mind watching it again. B. seems to like it.
-B. leaves.
11:15-12:00 – For whatever reason, I’m tired so decide to call it a night.
Night time routine. Bed.
